Snorkeling in the US Virgin Islands is an unforgettable experience. Imagine crystal-clear waters filled with colorful fish and thriving coral reefs. It’s like stepping into another world! Whether you're a seasoned snorkeler or trying it out for the first time, these breathtaking spots offer something special. Join me as I share my top three snorkeling locations that showcase the incredible beauty of this paradise. Grab your gear, and let’s dive in!

1. Waterlemon Cay/Leinster Bay

On the north side of St. John lies Waterlemon Cay, one of the top snorkeling spots in the US Virgin Islands. Here, you can expect to see an amazing variety of marine life. I have stayed here overnight for multiple days and spent countless hours exploring this bay. Typically, during my visits, I've spotted octopuses, green sea turtles, and my favorite Nurse Shark that patrols the shallows. I usually swim along the shoreline slowly checking things out and then head over to 3 ball reef along the main island side to where it drops off to about 30ft or more and gives way to awesome colors the deeper you go. This is my go to spot when we head out in the morning. Reachable by land or by boat!

If you want to stretch your legs after some time in the water, Leinster Bay Trail takes you past the ruins of old plantations, offering stunning views of some of the clearest waters in the Caribbean.

2. Salt Pond/Booby Rock

Next up is Salt Pond, found on the south side of St. John. This location is a personal favorite of mine, and I often opt to take our boat out here because the ride along the shoreline is fantastic. The seabed here drops to depths of 30-40 feet, making it an ideal spot for diverse marine life. I frequently see colorful coral, sea fans, an array of reef fish (triggerfish, trumpetfish, trunkfish) and of course, Green Sea Turtles and the occasional Nurse Shark! My favorite spotting being the graceful Spotted Eagle Rays....which is a treat if you can find them.

Each visit reveals something new; from quick-moving reef fish to the gentle sway of vibrant sea fans, there's a lot to explore. Accessible by both boat and land, Salt Pond caters to all types of visitors. Did you know that studies have shown that experiencing nature can reduce stress levels by up to 65%? Spending just a few hours here can lift your spirits!

3. Christmas Cove in Great St. James

Finally, we arrive at Christmas Cove in Great St. James. One of its unique features is a sunken sailboat that has become an artificial reef. This underwater habitat supports a lively ecosystem where you can often see turtles, trunkfish, and even the occasional octopus. On some days, you might even spot shoals of squid and tiny garden eels poking out of the seabed.

The gentle currents at Fish Cay create a wonderland for snorkeling. It's home to vibrant sea life that feels alive as you swim. Plus, I have a secret spot in this cove that feels like swimming in your own personal aquarium; it’s a treasure worth discovering! After a day of snorkeling, don’t forget to visit Pizza Pi, the floating pizza boat. It's the perfect way to unwind and satisfy your appetite while enjoying the beautiful views.

An Underwater Paradise Awaits

No matter your experience level, the US Virgin Islands offer some of the best underwater views around. From the lively marine life at Waterlemon Cay to the serene beauty of Salt Pond and the unique features of Christmas Cove, these spots are ones I know well and would love to tell you more about. I did major in Marine Biology, after all ;P
